We like audiobooks around here. We use them during our long drive from Dad's house to Mom's house, and they sure make the time pass quickly. Audiobooks are like sitting around the campfire 50,000 years ago listening to our tribal storyteller spin tales of valor--except we're driving down the freeway at 75 miles an hour.

And even though the girls' teachers might not think it counts as "reading," I do. Each of my girls reads just a bit above her grade level, but we've listened to some very grown-up stories together. Their comprehension is outstanding, especially when they have a couple of adults and a teenager nearby to clarify.

So don't think you have to buy audiobooks just by the grade level recommendation. As the kids listen, they're making movies in their imaginations. We have two going at once, all the time: one for the trip there, one for the trip back. One for us, one for all of us.

Plus, it's one copy of the story multiplied times 6 people! Talk about efficiency. It's this sharing that means the most. All of us participate, ask and answer questions about the characters and plot. Some of these productions are dramatic, too--better than television.
